Road Tripping Europe

Discovering and photographing the unknown beauty of Europe

TRACK – On the Up

Right next to the abandoned buildings of the Faculty of Architecture and Building you can see the uFo. No, that’s not an unidentified flying object, but the new forum of Ghent’s university. It’s on this building that you could see the work of Lawrence Weiner. This American conceptual artist creates philosophical and political texts on public walls.

For TRACK, he created On the UP:

(…) Weiner (…) rejetcs the hierarchical and geopolitical classification by which the West keeps a firm hold on its imagined position at the top of the world.

According to the guide, Weiner was apparently inspired by the negotiations of Belgian politicians to form a government which lasted more than a year. The balance of power between Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels is a very tricky one and this is actually what he is mocking. Who is on top and who isn’t? Which criteria do politicians actually use during these negotiations?
