When you think about Belgium, you probably think about chocolate. Brussels. Bruges. And beer. More than 1200 kinds of beer! But did you know that we Belgians also produce wine? And that you can find vineyards in some unusual places?
After our visit to the Sint-Pieters Abbey we went to its garden, which is located at the back of the building. You can imagine our surprise when we found a vineyard here! In the heart of this big city, there is a tranquil oasis, where wine is produced! The monks started the vineyard during the Middle Ages, but the production of its wine stopped with the arrival of Napoleon. Ghent’s Guild of Wine-Measurers restarted it in the 1970s.
In the middle of this beautiful and unusual location the Italian artist Massimo Bartolini created his artwork, called Bookyards. It was an open-air library, where people could borrow or buy books. Or as the guide says:
Bartolini installs the bookcases in line with the vines, leaning against and parallel to the slope of the garden. According to Bartolini, books too can broaden the mind, just like good wine.

Ha! Brilliant!
It also looks like the vineyard is not so removed from civilization. Is that the case?
It certainly is! It’s right in the middle of town.
wow
I told you so
yeah you done it
thanks
that is so different.how cool
But what about the weather? That must have played havoc with the book lovers?
Yes, it surely did. We have no idea how they protected the books; when we were there, the weather was quite nice.
What an interesting place!
Yep, it was quite a discovery!
Wow! Hah! Wow. Yeah, that’s awesome. Bookyards. Brilliant. I only have single word responses to this, that’s how cool it is
