Usually, The Viking and I avoid touristic attractions. But sometimes, you have to make an exception, because there are places that you simply must see or events that you have to experience. Such a place is Grenen.
Since we had free lodgings and since we had chosen to do self-catering, we could spend almost half of our budget to fuel. Which meant we could drive long distances. Which also meant that we could realize some of our dreams. Which is exactly what we did in the second week of our summer trip.
We had already been to the north of Jutland, but then it was still winter. It’s quite a drive, because it’s about 350 km from Nyborg. Because of the cold, the rain and the strong wind, we couldn’t do everything we had planned. Since that moment, we had expressed the wish to come back during summer. And now that the weather was slowly improving we thought it was time to realize dream number 1: visit Grenen.
What is so special about this place? According to Wikipedia,
Grenen, the northmost tip of Jutland, north of the town of Skagen, thereby the northmost point of Denmark (excluding the Faroe Islands and Greenland). It is the junction point between the strait of Skagerrak (part of North Sea) and Kattegat sea.
This is indeed a place where two seas meet! There are two ways to visit this special place: on foot or you can take the so-called Earthworm, which is a wagon pulled by a tractor. Since this last option only costs a couple of euros and you can avoid climbing very high dunes, we just went for it.
You buy your ticket on the “worm” and three minutes later, you can see the two seas crashing into each other. What a sight! It’s quite spectacular to see all these waves and to experience the special atmosphere. People of all ages come here to look at this natural event; everybody is excited and elated! And so were we! Yes, we did like everybody else, trying to stand with one foot in one sea and with the other foot in sea number 2!
This was nature at its best. Definitely a highlight! And the best start of a week that we will never forget!
Here are the other pictures!
Awesome! That looks like something I would love to see.
(see? sea! ha!)
If you think this is awesome, wait until you see the rest of our pictures later this week
