The word “mossel” in Dutch – or “moule” in French – is mussel in English. Mussels with French fries is one of Belgium’s most famous and popular dishes. Nowadays, you can eat mussels almost during the whole year, but a lot of Belgians stick to the old rule of only consuming them during the months that have the letter “r” in their name. To be honest, I only prepare them between the months of October and February.
In this artwork, it looks as if the mussel has been turned into a gold, thus transforming it into a precious, almost magical object. It is a beautiful homage to the star of the Belgian cuisine. Actually, no real gold was used in the creation of this work of art; what you see, is copper.
Golden Mossel was made by Valérie Kools-Fontibus, a designer and artist who likes to work with … copper.
