Road Tripping Europe

Discovering and photographing the unknown beauty of Europe

Inspired by movies – The Strangers Outside: What is that building?

When I was a child, my parents were often annoyed by my questions and my curiosity. I always told them that if you are not curious, you don’t know anything!

I was very curious about the big building with the war memorial that was surrounded by the holiday cottages. It was clear it had something to do with World War I, but what was the link exactly? Finally, after a couple of hours of research on the Internet, I found the answer.

In order to stop the Germans from conquering Antwerp (one of the biggest cities in Belgium), a circle of bunkers and fortifications was built. Sint-Katelijne-Waver – where part of the movie was shot – was one of the small towns with these bunkers and fortifications. Our mysterious building was such a fortification and according to the information I found on the Internet, some heavy fighting went on until September 1914. Lots of people were killed here.

The Viking and I actually find it creepy that these holiday cottages surrounded a building where so many people had died… In general, there was an eerie atmosphere here. And what were all these peacocks doing around the fortification? Again, I took a mix of color and b&w pictures.
