Road Tripping Europe

Discovering and photographing the unknown beauty of Europe

Our UNESCO project – The historic center of Prague

I have to admit it, I fell in love with Prague immediately! I had never seen so many beautiful intact historical buildings in one town. This is a place I surely want to visit again and again.

The three major parts of Prague are:

  1. Hradcany and Lesser Town (Mala Strana), with Prague Castle and Charles Bridge as some of the highlights.
  2. Old Town (Stare Mesto) and Josefov, with its breathtaking Jewish Quarter
  3. New Town (Nove Mesto), with amongst others Wenceslas Square

It was a cloudy, sometimes rainy day when The Viking and I were there, so I took my pictures in black and white. I also thought it suited better with the historical buildings. Today, I post a random selection of sights and places. The next days, I will post some places that had a special meaning for us.

This is what the UNESCO site says about the historical center of Prague:

Prague belongs to the group of historic cities which have preserved the structure of their development until the present times. Within the core of Prague, successive stages of growth and changes have respected the original grand-scale urban structure of the Early Middle Ages. This structure was essentially and greatly enlarged with urban activities in the High Gothic period with more additions during the High Baroque period and in the 19th century. It has been saved from any large-scale urban renewal or massive demolitions and thus preserves its overall configuration, pattern and spatial composition.

Here are the other pictures.

When I was there in 1984 (Iron Curtain days) I remember feeling as though a sort of grim tension pervaded the place… My sister returned a few years ago for a legal internship over the summer, and reported a very different feel! The black & white reminds me of that older, grimmer version of Prague, though.

If it hadn’t been for the weather, I would have made color pictures, and then it would have looked different :-)

It is a beautiful city and though it is weird and kinda sad to say, but the fact that the city was behind the curtain meant not much in the centre was modernised and sacrificed to economic development, innovation and urban planning. So the city still has the feel from before the curtain fell.

It has and that’s one of the reasons I liked it so much!
