What would Belgium be without pubs? Even the smallest village – no matter what part of the country – has at least one. On the Albert I – Promenade in Ostend, there are numerous pubs and restaurants, but Cafe De Floride was one of Gaye’s favorites.
When The Viking and I looked at the videos on the iPod, we had the feeling De Floride used to be a popular pub. Funny detail: when one of the local people asked Gaye to sing a song, he started singing the French national hymn! Anyway, nowadays, it has become what we call in Dutch a “taverne”, where you can not only have a drink, but also have a meal.
Given the fact that Marvin Gaye seemed to enjoy life to the fullest, we can imagine that he frequented a lot of other pubs as well! Here are the pictures!
Did he really sing the french anthem…?! That’s where the inspiration for Leterme, our ex-prime minister, came from when he was asked to sing our Belgian hymn…!
Allons enfants de la patrille, oh heilig land der vaâd’ren…
Yes, Leterme was inspired by Gaye
I really enjoyed this series on Marvin Gaye. He was born on April 2 and died on April 1. I still remember when it was announced that his father had shot him to death.
